21st Annual Michigan Indian Family Olympics
Congratulations to all Tribal Members who participated in the 21st annual Michigan Indian Family Olympics at Central Michigan University’s Bennett Field on July 25.

The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi came in second place out of six Michigan Indian tribes: the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa, the Gun Lake Tribe of Potawatomi, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi, and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. In all, 750 Native American athletes participated in the Inter-Tribal track and field activities hosted by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.

FireKeepers Casino Construction Progress
FireKeepers Casino is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2009.
“The Tribe is very pleased with the progress that we are making in the construction of FireKeepers Casino,” said Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Tribal Chairperson, Laura Spurr. “We have waited a long time to bring economic development and jobs to not only tribal members but also to the greater Calhoun County region.”

The 236,000 square-foot casino will create approximately 2,200 jobs — 700 construction and 1,500 permanent jobs, in addition to spin off jobs.

Pine Creek Reservation taken into Federal Trust
On July 8, 2008, the Tribe was informed that Terry Virden, the Regional Director of the BIA, signed the papers to take Pine Creek into Federal Trust. This has been a long process, but one in which the Tribe was steadfast in pursuing. The Tribe thanks David Jones from our Environmental Department for taking this application through all the steps in Sault St. Marie, Minneapolis, and then on to Washington, D.C.

Tribal Chairwoman Laura Spurr shared a quote with the membership, in her monthly column this August, from one of the Tribe’s Washington attorneys: “If a generation is 24 years, it has taken exactly seven generations—spanning 168 years from 1840 to 2008—for the United States to exercise Federal superintendence over Pine Creek. Chief Moguago would be pleased to learn what you all have accomplished today.”
